Acoustic Songs
I write songs.
When I first picked up a guitar, I didn't want to learn how to play as much as I wanted to write
songs with it. I took some classical guitar lessons with a nylon and silver string guitar, but my
goal was only to get to the point where I could play good enough to write.
I wrote lots of bad songs and somewhere along the way learned to play somewhat. E
ventually I
stopped trying for anything in particular and just wrote.
I've never listened to any requisite "greats," so I've got a strange set of influences. Anymore, I
mostly listen to hip-hop (yes, really).
I'm a compulsive self-editor and throw out 95% of anything
I write (most of the time in the first few minutes...though I do have 50-100 songs I did finish that
you'll never hear)
. I didn't become confident in my writing until part of me gave up trying to
write a certain song,
make a certain sound, or say a certain thing a certain way and just write
the way it's supposed to be written
.

I hope you like my songs─ideally, they're for you. But if not, I like them enough for me.

About Tom Dalton's debut EP
Recorded in 2006 in an upstairs room, Tom Dalton's debut EP introduces his songwriting
style as well as his
love for recording naturally, with the flaws left in. Hearing his record is a
lot like hearing him play.
Tracked mostly with first-takes, one song was written while it was
being recorded
(Generation), lending to its conversational, inner monologue feel.
Deceptively bright, the lyrics and music sometimes mask the sad weight they carry...and
sometimes, in their straightforwardness, don't.
